The general advice on buying online is to not book your plumber until you have all your items arrived at home and ready to be fitted. This means you're not paying a plumber until you're ready for your new bathroom suite has arrived.
If you're DIY'ing then you will want to check you have the right tools for the jobs and what time your local plumbing store shuts (Incase you break something important!)
Checking out your bathroom before you upgrade.
If you're replacing a bath then take off the end and side panels and see what's underneath. Get a torch to see properly. Check what the pipes are made of. If they're made of lead then you could consider changing them.
Taking out a cast iron bath may be tricky and you'll need help.
General plumbing hints and tips.
All the stopcocks in the house should be labelled. You should check periodically
that you can turn them off. It is no good waiting until you have a burst
or want to do some DIY to find out that the stoptap is stuck.
